trailer terminology
Introduction to the Marco Range
What exactly is a "Trailer"?

The term " Trailer " covers everything from a small box on wheels for carrying light loads to a large articulated unit hauling seriously heavy goods! Not to mention movie trailers, of course. Even in the smaller ranges, there are numerous types with particular uses, such as Boat Trailers, Car Trailers / Transporters, Van & Box Trailers and many varieties of agricultural & industrial trailers. Below are common descriptions of what we manufacture at Marco.

Trailer Sizes
The shortest " Exhibition Trailer " body is normally a few centimetres over 2.5m at 8 feet long and 3m (9' 10") overall including the drawbar. The maximum permitted length of the body of a unit built to be towed by a suitable vehicle is 7 metres (23 feet). Many customers decide they do not require the full 7m once they appreciate the amount of space available for promotion and other material provided by well-designed shorter units, sometimes with the addition of a 'pod' or extension.

Most units are built to their maximum width of 2.3 metres (7' 6"). For stability and comfort reasons the body-height is often also around the 2.3 metre (7' 6") mark. The overall height varies according to design and other factors.
(The above applies to trailers with drawbars, not semi-trailers with tractor units which count as LGVs.)

Trailed or Motorised?
Trailed & Towed refer to a chassis pulled by a separate vehicle.   Motorised or self-powered units, however, have a driver's cab & engine unit at the front of the chassis.   (In both cases the chassis carries the bodywork).

For those who prefer not to tow & whose budget runs to a motor vehicle with specially built body, Marco's range includes motorised units. These take the form of a 'chassis-cab' unit comprising a 3-5 ton Max Gross Weight Peugeot 'Boxer' or Citroën 'Relay' with specially adapted long, low chassis which accepts the purpose-built Marco body. Bodies vary in length from 4.5 metres (14' 9") to a maximum of 6m (19' 7"). Air suspension is available if required.   For examples see Motorised units.

Types of Axle - The Running Gear
See Illustration
  • Single Axle: One axle, usually in the centre of the trailer, used with small, light units not expected to carry much weight.
  • Double-Axle: Any trailer with two axles.
  • Twin Axle / Close-coupled: Two identical axles, mounted together near the centre of the trailer with a rigid A-frame Drawbar.
For most purposes a twin-axle is the standard configuration used with exhibition-type trailers.
  • Drawbar and Turntable Trailers: Although all trailers have drawbars, a 'Drawbar Trailer' usually indicates a double-axled unit with the axles at the front and rear - ie, not 'close-coupled'.
The front 'steering' axle can be of the Ackerman steering type (which automatically applies the correct wheel alignment when turning), or mounted on a turntable with a hinged drawbar.
The advantage of a Turntable-type front axle is that the Drawbar can be turned back under the chassis, saving space.
The disadvantage is that it requires more skill to manoeuvre into position than a fixed-drawbar trailer.
