The RNLI is recognised as a vital emergency service; entirely funded by and dependent on voluntary contributions.
In 2007 lifeboat crews launched 8141 times rescuing 7834 people. In that same year RNLI Lifeguards attended 8201 incidents aiding 9883 people on beaches in the South, South West and East of England.
Following another successful season, in the autumn of 2007 RNLI shore works took the decision to upgrade and add to lifeguard beachside faculties. A concept was drawn up for a mobile operations room that could be deployed at the beginning of each season and removed from site, post operations. Discussions with a number of interested manufacturers were held, and following a successful consultation Marco were chosen to manufacture a prototype.
Utilising modern materials, sound engineering principles and years of experience a design was put forward that included innovative uninterrupted 260° panoramic vision using toughened glass; unique special wheel and tyre combination capable of road and off road (soft beach sand) use; removable draw bar and jacking system allowing the unit to be lowered as close to the surface as possible enabling use of integral decking; exterior body and interior manufactured entirely of GRP polycarbonate composite panels thus proving durable and weather resistant, ensuring longevity.
The prototype was approved in January 2008 and an order confirmed for 17 units. In summer 2008 all 17 were in operation providing much needed operations centres for a rapidly expanding service. In December 2008 an order for a further 17 units was placed for delivery in 2009 |
