In response to a request by older people in the borough and with a grant from the Department of Health, Croydon Primary Care Trust working in partnership with the local voluntary sector came together to bring services, information and advice to older people in the local community.
Following a successful trial utilizing a converted bus a decision was taken to have a purpose made vehicle commissioned and a number of manufacturers were invited to tender. Design, attention to detail and brief together with an ability to meet a tight budget constraint were key to any offer; the ability of Marco to meet these requirements assured the contract award. The design called for a vehicle that was instantly recognized, easily accessible and could house required clinical and information services. A Peugeot boxer cab with 6m AL-KO low chassis conversion and Marco X series body shell with side extending pod was specified.
The unit features quiet running 230v power source, enough to run the unit during times when clinical staff are performing hearing tests in the separate sound proofed room. The clinical area is also used for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and eye testing. A basin with plumbed in hot water facility, soap and towel dispensers is fitted.
In the main reception area, with access via wheelchair lift, ramp and steps, information is made available via LCD screen, PCs and printed literature. For maneuvering in a city environment the POP (Partnership for Older People) bus benefits from side and rear view cameras and audible vehicle reversing warning. With help from Marco, Croydon’s older population are receiving a wealth of information and assistance that otherwise would have been difficult to access.
